Once again, Catholicism prevails and we had a week off of uni :D I believe that Pfingsten is technically only on the Monday, evidently the Germans just fancied a week off. Not that i'm complaining! So we booked ourselves into a hostel for three nights and explored the beautiful city.
It really is a fab city, so much to do and two and a half days was not enough time! It took us a bout 8 hours and three or four trains to get there but it was definitely worth it. Weary from our travels and desperately hungry, we sought out a traditional Baeyerisch restaurant - if you ever go to Nuremberg, you have to have a Nuremberg Bratwurst!! The best wurst you'll ever have......

The currywurst feind in me was very happy :) We later looked for a bar as a cocktail was certainly in order, first of all we headed to the obligatory Irish Pub - Finnaghans in this case.
Despite the cliche bar, it was lovely to sit out on the street enjoying the city night life, a favoured past time of ours :P It's something that i'll miss about Germany - their street cafe culture is glorious. There's nothing like it at home and the atmosphere is hard to re-create. So, after a civilised drink, we headed for what turned out to be the seediest bar in the Bundesland.....but they served very large, very strong, and very cheap Long Island Ice Teas :DDD It doesn't take much for us to look past the filth and letchiness.
(You can even see all of the alcohol settling at the bottom....)
Our first day was spent wandering around the Altstadt taking photos like the tacky tourists we are, plus a rather interesting trip to the Hans Sachs museum.
Just me chilling with Hans (Dom, if you are reading this, see! I did find a Hans :P)
We even took a wee train tour around the city.....when ever i see people doing this or open bus tours, i judge them. I judge them a lot - however, having walked around in the rain all day, a train is a welcome site!
Josh and Sammy enjoying some rest bite from the rain! |
We found a wonderful second hand book shop where i bought a collection of Goethe and Schiller's works....the geek in me will always out! Always a joy finding a book shop :D
The next day we headed out to the Rally Grounds on the outskirts of the city - a very sobering experience but certainly worth it. The museum was a highlight of the tour as it's something that i've always wanted to vista having studied German history throughout school.
This is the main Rally site, but was never finished. |
A view from across the lake... |
And below, is one of the most famous buildings from the era. There are countless films of Hitler making his speeches from the balcony. I never thought i'd stand in the same place as Hitler did.....very strange!
It's a strange atmosphere around this area, as they have built a main road through the rally ground site. It almost doesn't seem like a historical site at all!
I realise that this entry isn't exactly very cheery and is actually quite morbid and depressing....not really what Pfingsten holiday is about! I suppose we favoured a cultural and historical break rather than getting rat-arsed in some bar in Muenchen.....however, this is perhaps the first and only historical trip we have taken/will take. Just in case you were worried there would be another monotonous post!
On a slightly more light hearted note, those who are/have been students of Essex will appreciate this, we came across some tyrannous ducks in the street, not unlike our old Swans who appeared to have carried out a Putsch and taken over squares 3 and 4! Unlike our poor swans who met a more unkind fate, these ducks were here pretty much everyday, roaming the same square and hanging out with the local yokals :)
Oh, and we found a water fountain with water spouting out of the ladies breasts :D
......and this is for Lizi ;).....
All in all, it was a great trip! We had tonnes of fun trying to get there, got to see so much of such a wonderful city (of which we have so much more to see), met some randomers in the hostel ( making friends where ever we go :P) ...... and this photo just sums up the trip. (tiring.....!)
(I realise that this post is very outdated, sorry! I'm less than useless! Cochem post to follow soon :) )
Bis blad! xxxxxx
