Teil 9.

In order to escape the clutches of Trier for the day, we took a wee trip to Heidelberg :) Twas grand! Although getting up at 6am is not the one. We were at the Hauptbahnhof for 7.45am only to find that we couldn't use our tickets until 9am. eurgh! So we took a dander into town and got breakfast, have to admit that i've never been in town that early before (unless i'm on my way home that is :/ ). It was surprisingly refreshing, although i shan't be doing it again anytime soon lol So we headed off to Homburg, our first stop...

...and then onto Kaiserslautern and finally, got the Strassenbahn to Heidelberg. Never in my life have i seen soo many cyclists using the train! And so many children! An hour and a half in a confined space was not enjoyable, the masses of people was most likely due to the fact that it was Brueckentag (if a public holiday, like ascension day that took place the day before, happens just before a weekend, the germans are just like, hell are we going to work on friday. so they take the day off. love their mindset!), therefore every man and his dog was out and about.  During our trip on the Strassenbahn, we found Frankenstein!...well a town called Frankenstein anyway :) When we arrived in Heidelberg, we were greeted by a sea of bicycles, rather reminiscent of Cambers i think....

So we headed to the Altstadt and i must admit it's rather pretty! I suppose it's like any other German town, Barock/Gothic buildings, cobbled streets....but beautiful none-the-less :)

Personally, the highlight for me was the surroundings - the city is set in amongst some wonderfully plush, green mountains - almost valley-esque. In the picture below, you can see what i mean - the building in the foreground is the Rathaus - just like a Town Hall, but with charming architecture :P

(you can also see that the street-cafe culture is slowly beginning to creep back into our lives! whoop! But perhaps the weather is somewhat lagging behind :( )

Now, in the interest of maintaining my mature and sophisticated image (:P), please look away is you fear your opinion of me may decrease with ease.....

Yeah. You'd never have thought i was 21 :/ Oh well, i suppose you could call it the obligatory naughty pic ;) If you look closely to the left, there's the 'Classic Country Clothing' shop.....very german, don't you think?

Finally, Hallveig's leaving party :( Our wonderful Icelandic friend is heading off home this week, so we had a wee bit of a leaving party for her....i would elaborate, but i fear it would be rather brief lol i believe a good night was had by most :/ i was tucked up in bed by midnight thanks to our prinks on the train back from Saarbruecken. A lesson learnt i think. Although there is one lasting memory - rotten shark. A speciality in Iceland. But it wasn't until the other day, when on a rather entertaining QI loop on Youtube, did i discover exactly how this shark was 'prepared'......

GO TO 13 MINS 58 SECS

Essentially, a shark is killed, cut up, soaked in urine (whose urine, is not made clear) and buried beneath the sand to rot. Then it is cut up into little pieces and passed off to tourists as smelly cheese. They vom and then are laughed at. I can safely say, it was the worst piece of fish i have ever eaten and couple with some kind of Icelandic vodka, it does not make for a pretty ending :/ Our building still stank of shark three days later, the cleaners were having a right hissy fit over it! I think it took Jen two washes to wash the smell out of her clothes, and two showers for Hallveig!

EEEEK! So next week is Pentecost and we're off on our travels to Nuernberg for a few days! Internet allowance permitting, i shall be blogging very soon :D Until then, happy good luck with exams ( for those of you unfortunate enough)!!!!

Bis bald xxx
